Principal Investigator

Sharan Grewal is an Assistant Professor of Government at American University and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. His first book, Soldiers of Democracy? Military Legacies and the Arab Spring (Oxford University Press), explores why some militaries support and others thwart democratic transitions.

Research Fellows

Current Fellows:

Rachel Bartz is a third-year international relations major and economics minor. She is curious about promoting lasting democratization in the Arab world. Rachel joined the People Power Data Project team to discover more unique, successful tactics for pro-democracy protesters. She is the former president of the William & Mary Debate Society and a member of the Lutheran Student Association. 

Lena Bullard is a sophomore majoring in International Relations and French/Francophone Studies. She is a member of the 1693 Scholars Program. Her research interests include global decolonization, international law, and human rights. Additionally, she is a research fellow with the International Justice Lab and is on the Conduct and Honor Advisory Program (CHAP) executive board. 

Georgia Freyer is a sophomore majoring in Government with a minor in history. Her research interests include Latin American politics and protest. In her spare time Georgia competes on William & Mary's undergraduate moot court team and belongs to the Film Society. 

Jenine Samara is a sophomore majoring in International Relations with a Religious Studies minor. Her research interests include Middle Eastern affairs with a focus on Palestinian liberation movements. In her spare time, Jenine works on The Flat Hat Podcast and serves on the executive board of Students for Justice in Palestine.

Justin Eng is sophomore majoring in government and economics. He covers protester and regime tactics and interactions in democratic movements in developing countries, mostly in Asia. He is interested in conflict, identity, and resources in developing countries. He heads a foreign policy society and is a financial manager for an international case competition.

Khaled Maalouf is a sophomore majoring in international politics with a focus on the Middle East. He is interested in a range of subregional topics, including Levantine affairs, counterterrorism, and human rights. At the People Power Data Project, he has focused especially on 21st century Arab uprisings.
